Fleet Focus
A lot of thought has gone into considering options for fleet design. Since the galaxy is destined for large scale war it seemed logical to shape ourselves accordingly. The current model has us as the "Tip of the Spear". (the Delta Force of Starfleet)
As it states on the Wiki page: Red Squadron’s primary tasks are, HAHO (High Altitude High Objective, ship –to-ship ) and HALO (High Altitude Low Objective ship-to-ground) EIO (Enemy Intervention Operations), although it is an extremely versatile group capable of assuming many covert missions, including, but not limited to, rescuing hostages, raids, and eliminating or surveying covert enemy forces.
This is not meant to restrict us in any way from traditional Starfleet missions but rather to give us a focus that would make us a commodity to Starfleet.
Your thoughts on Strategic planning are welcome.

Re: Fleet Focus
I know no one has posted in this topic for quite some time, and forgive me if this has already been covered, but on the science/medical end, I offer that RS could be used to handle such missions in sections of the universe that are considered openly hostile or dangerous, requiring a more robust and elite response than Starfleet supplies with baseline operations.
Such as medical supplies/evacs/treatment supplied to infected/dangerous warzones. Scientific research conducted in openly contested/highly adverse environments and galaxies.
RS goes in and performs these duties when Starfleet would expect regular rank and file commands to get blown out of space.

Re: Fleet Focus
I agree. We are one of two elite units mentioned in ST canon. We are the best of the best. And we should operate where others would either get vaped or fail. Or just refuse to go entirely (heaven forbid).

Re: Fleet Focus
this is very true. we are the elite of the elite, we should and hope be the front line to the war against the klingons.

Re: Fleet Focus
well this may sound very klingonesque, but why run at all. running only postpones the inevitable

Re: Fleet Focus
I agree that we should be an elite strike force, but when looking at other sections such as Engineering we don't want to step on the toes of other groups. It was mentioned in the conference about adding some things to STO canon, one of them possibly being the Corps of Engineers. As much as I love being an engineer, I think its better to focus ourselves as a tactical group and have some specialists with us... we'd have better field medics etc

Re: Fleet Focus
“Being the Special Forces” of the federation is a very difficult ideology to wrap my head completely around. Special Forces in general are usually one of two things: very specialized or very flexible. What I mean by this is that most units have a specific role that they do or that they are so flexible their mission is generalized.
In both situations the members are considered the most highly trained in their prospective fields. They are usually very small and only represent the slightest fraction of their forces. Since we are a fleet it is difficult for me to get that feel.
The tip of the spear does make a lot of sense to me. Since I am a former Marine Captain I recognize the 1st Marine Division is the tip of the spear for Marine Corps operations. They are the ground force that all supportive units are attached to and operate through (on a large scale). However, the division is not any different than any other Marine Division. There are only three active divisions and one reserve. Usually the General of 1st Mar Div. is the most senior of the three and his staff is as well. That is the only difference though.
Regardless of our specialization we would still have the same organizations as any other fleet, but ours would be more specialized for the area we are doing operations.

Well if you were in the Marines then I take this opportunity to salute you for your service to this great country we live in. Thank you.
As for the word fleet, that's just Starfleet slag for guild.

Re: Fleet Focus
This I understand, but its function is still the same. I like the platform that this opens up for people that role-play. You don't start at the bottom. It makes everyone a "captain" (a title not a rank) with a certain hero status. Yes you have to prove yourself and progress, but you aren't a peon. I'm not saying players don't define themselves in those situations as the hero or anti-hero, but this gives a large scale feeling.

Re: Fleet Focus
i too like how you can captian your own ship and not be at the rank of captain. it opens up alot of doors for your progression as a character in the star trek universe. it allows me to begin my quest against the borg
